Dev Update #273

Writing scene 30.

It's not finished. Far from that. I didn't have as much time as I expected this week, but more than that I do have trouble writing that scene. At the moment, the scene is 3800 words long, which is shorter than what I expected but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I have trouble finding the right tone. It's a special moment for Eve and Jack and it's not an easy write. Their personalities are slightly shifting as they grow more confident and comfortable with each other, but I don't want to stray too far away from their original self. There is a fragile line and yet a vast difference between evolving a character and writing him completely wrong. For example, Jack is supposed to grow some confidence, and I'm struggling to show that without having him express himself like a total douchebag. Which is wrong. The same goes for Eve.

At the moment, I have about 80 % of the scene, but as I'm reading it, I feel like most of my dialogues are off. The action and the descriptions are good and feel just right, but the dialogues are not. So I will have to rewrite it. I think I can rewrite the dialogue without touching anything else.

Maybe there's also a problem with the rhythm of the scene. My original plan was a three-part one, with a conversation at the start, some action, and then some more talking. That feels a bit sluggish. I will probably lighten the first discussion, add it to the third part, or get rid of it entirely and focus more on the action.

I wrote and rewrote the scene a couple of times already, I will rework it once more next week. I've been planning that scene for so long, I thought it would be an easy write. I should have known better. Nothing good is easy.

The quick sum up :

  • Day 6 Part 6 will contain 3 new scenes: scenes 30, 31, and 32.
  • Day 6 Part 5 will contain 1 reworked scene: Day 2, scene 3.
  • 3816 words of new content so far.
  • I'm currently writing scene 30.

Is there nobody you can bounce these conversations of to get some feedback?  A female/male perspective could perhaps help as well (if you can find someone IRL that you can have those conversations with).

I do have some readers who will give me feedback, but I usually don't make them read my scripts until they are nearly done. I don't share something I'm not reasonably satisfied with.

I was more thinking about when you're still deciding things, like an author friend of mine used to ask me things because she wanted a male perspective. She was heavily surprised by some of my answers, but it did help her to think in the right direction and decide what she wanted to do and how it would be perceived. No worries if that is not your way of working.

Yeah, I understand that. But as you said, it's not how I work. I'm finding my way through it though. We are progressing.
