Summer Scent v0.6.3a - Android.

Today, I'm publishing an Android build for v0.6.3, on Patreon and SubscribeStar.

However, it comes with a warning and a clarification.

It must be pretty obvious that Android builds aren't my priority. I've always considered Summer Scent to be a PC game first. Mac and Android builds are just a courtesy and a bonus offered with the PC version of the game. The first reason for this is that I simply have no way to offer proper support for these two platforms. Be it by lack of hardware or knowledge, I simply cannot guarantee that I will be able to consistently produce, and maintain Mac and Android builds.

Nothing has changed on that front, especially after the problems I had producing Android builds, and I don't see my point of view changing anytime soon.

As of today, the demand for an Android build might be growing but it's still marginal. For v0.6.2, the last time I released a proper Android version, less than 5 % of the downloads were Android builds.

Steam doesn't sell Android games and there is no proper store for that kind of visual novel. And distributing APKs without any guarantee or secure environment is ground for trouble.

Even if Renpy offers a direct compilation into an Android build, it doesn't mean that you don't need specific developments in order to adapt your game for the Android platform. Making a proper mobile game is a technical challenge due essentially from an ui standpoint, furthermore complicated by the wide variety of devices and versions of the operating system. Android's fragmentation is a nightmare in itself.

Talking specifically about Summer Scent and v0.6.3, to produce that build, I had to use a more recent version of the Renpy engine which isn't 100 % compatible with Summer Scent. It comes with a lot of issues. I fixed the more problematic ones so that the game can be played. But several features are missing and there are several issues with the interface. I'm also not sure that your previous saves will be compatible with the new engine. If it is playable,  I'm not sure it's enjoyable.

I could probably make a better build, 100% functional with all features and a proper mobile-oriented interface but it would mean investing weeks of work into it.

In the end, making a proper Android build would mean essentially means investing time into coding and maintaining a second game.

For me, it's not worth it.

However, if possible, I will still continue to make half-assed, low-effort, mostly broken, android builds as I've been told that most players out there just don't care about the features and just want to browse the story.

But starting now they will only be available on Patreon and SubscribeStar and their link will be prefaced with a warning.

"Summer Scent is a PC game. Mac and Android build are a courtesy and a bonus offered with the PC version of the game. I have no way to offer proper support for these two platforms and cannot guarantee that I'll be able to produce them in the future. They may disappear at any time.

Also, the Android version is mostly broken."

Ask one of the usual porters to make an 'official port' for you, instead.

I dont know how busy they are, if they will do it or not, etc, but estrada777 has already ported v0.6.3. I dont know how well It works, but the potentisl for some kind of arrangement would seem to be there

That's the kind of collaboration that requires trust.
To be honest, I don't see myself asking for help someone who takes my game and redistributes it freely.
It would be adding insult to injury.

Many of the games that get ported are released for free at some point, the main porters usually try not to release a port before that happens. If you asked them to stop porting your game, I wouldnt be surprised if estrada777 did so. They generally seem to be fairly reasonable people who have more than enough to do.

Alternatively, I believe that some of them are willing to do the work and let the dev control the distribution, depends how the dev wants to handle it.

Either way, I don't really see that you lose a lot by having a word. Hope it works out for you.

I don't plan to release Summer Scent for free. I want to release it on Steam and sell it. I'm trying to make a living out of it. (Let's be honest, it works pretty meh so far, but it's either that or there is no game at all.)

Maybe it's misplaced pride, but I can't really envision anyone but me doing that work.
Thank you!

Im sorry I wasn't clearer. What I was suggesting was that you contact them, ask them to stop distributing your work for free and say that if they really want to help you wouldnt mind a hand in porting the android version, making clear that the android version would only be released by you via itch.io etc. I would expect the first request to not cause a problem and the second request might be achievable.

I only suggest it because you were talking about problems with the android version and I try to help where I can.

No need to be sorry. I'll have to study the Android problem carefully. To be honest I'm not even sure you can actually distribute an Android version of the game elsewhere while selling the pc version on Steam. That's something I'll have to look into.

Every piece of advice is good to hear.
