Dev Update #94

Not much to say this week.

I'm still working on posing scene 6. So far, I've posed about 70% of the shots I've planned. I hope to finish it this weekend, maybe by Monday.

A lot of the remaining shots are very "static" so it should be doable.

The rendering is lagging a bit behind. I'm not worried by the rendering speed, however. I'm more concerned about the heat. It's getting hot in here. So far my GPU is holding the line but I'm still a bit concerned about the rising temperatures. During winter, rendering made it go up to 65c. The max temperature is now about 70c and it's going to get hotter with summer. My hardware should be fine but I can't help but worry a bit.

I'm going to water cool everything in the very near future. I hope it will help.

The quick sum up :

  • Day 6 Part 1 will contain 13 scenes.
  • Scenes 1 to 6 are written.
  • Scene 1 to 5 are posed and rendered. 70% of scene 6 is posed.
  • Scene 1 to 5 are coded.
  • 20 103 words, 3567 lines of code, 357 shots are posed and 312 are rendered.
  • 10 environments have been reworked.
  • I'm currently posing scene 6.

Take it from someone that enjoys the hardware side of computers  if you are below  85c you are safe.  Your card(s) won't run quite as fast but they wont be damaged.  Most cards are designed to get up to ~95-100c before they try to save themselves by running the clocks as low as half speed.   And yes, if you can keep the cards at 50c or below then they will be running at their top boost speeds.

There is nothing wrong with water cooling  it can help you get to the better boost speeds.    I am just trying to tell you that these temps are nothing to  worry about.

Enjoying most of the routes so far and look forward to the next installment.

I've already been told that kind of things but I can't help but worry a bit. To be honest I wasn't that concerned when I was working with a rtx 2070. But the price of the rtx 3090 and the global gpu shortage got me... slightly more on edge.

Oh I fully understand.  I am in the don't yet have one boat.  And since you sound like you know what you are getting yourself into   I wish you the best of luck.

Just looked up the specs and price of the RTX 3090.  Holy f****!! There seem to be, according to Lord Google search, many varieties. Ranging from 700-2200 USD. Early spring I had an issue w/ an app on my machine that caused my CPU's and GTX 1080 8gb to run at 219f until I found a way to slow it down. All fans were maxed, all CPU cores were maxed, was freaking me out.

My appreciation for your work, and all the others out there, went wayyy up after learning the cost of hardware for 3D rendering. I wonder how long it would take my machine. lol.

Keep up the good work, Cap.

Yes, that stuff isn't cheap. And it's not even professionnal hardware. The rtx 3090 is the best consumer grade gpu for rendering with Iray. With the global gpu shortage, they are hard to find and the prices have been pumped up a bit. So it's definitely not a good time to burn one of these babies !
