Dev Update #182

Scene 21.

I'm currently posing it. I've planned 257 renders. I'm thirty shots into it. Not much else to say on that part.

Hardware drama.

I had a pretty scary issue with my HDD today. Specifically, the one that holds all my development files. I was working on posing scene 21, and suddenly I couldn't save anymore. A reboot seemed to resolve the issue for a time but it came back pretty fast.

Needless to say that I freaked out.

The perspective of a hard drive dying and taking all my work with it scared the shit out of me. I had a backup but it was pretty old and limited. I need to be more thorough on that. I managed to recover almost all of the files and stored everything on an external hard drive. I'm currently uploading everything to the cloud.

So the files and the game should be safe. But my hard drive is definitely failing. I'll have to replace it as soon as possible. In the meantime, I'll relocate my files to be able to keep working. I might be able to cannibalise an older machine for some spare parts. I think I have a 1 To SDD around that I should be able to use while waiting for another drive. I'm gonna work on that.

The quick sum up :

  • Day 6 Part 2 will contain 8 scenes (Scenes 19 to 26).
  • Scenes 19 to 21 are written, and scenes 19 and 20 are posed and rendered.
  • 21086 words so far.
  • 680 renders are planned, 453 shots are posed and 423 are rendered.
  • I'm working on posing scene 21.

I hope the boat stays afloat till you get a confidence-inspiring backup system in place. Personally, I work locally on-system and have a rotating backup to two on-site NAS. No cloud backup as of yet, though, so a fire or other major disaster would still wipe me the F out.

Really looking forward to the next update!

The cloud backup should be sufficient but I'm probably going to look for a way to regularly archive locally. A NAS could be a solution. A bit costly though.

I keep my work on my Synology NAS with scheduled backups to another Synology NAS and to their C2 Cloud Backup.  It Just Works and has seen me through a few HDD failures (as well as a few User Errors ;-).

I'm probably going to look for a similar solution. As soon as I can.
